mothers-day-cheat-cheet

Every year, we allot ourselves one day – this year it’s May 10 – to thank Mom for being the wonder woman that she is. Who else could find your long-lost soccer cleats, survive your deafening snare drum practice and selflessly chauffeur you to the ends of the earth? Only a Mom!

I think we all have at least one defining moment when Mom came through for us in a big way. As a kid, I begged my mom to play in a mother-daughter softball game with me. I’m not sure if my mom ever swung a bat in her life prior to that day, but she showed up determined to play.

It’s been more than a decade since her softball debut and she still has a battle wounds from a minor mishap. We tease her about it but she never blamed me for guilt-tripping her into playing. Even though she should. While it’s safe to say that any morsel of athletic ability I may possess comes from my Dad, I can only hope that I have a heart as big as my Mom.

We can never really repay the Moms of the world for putting up with messy rooms, uneaten vegetables or those tumultuous teenage years, but it’s still worth a try! Here are a few places to treat a special Mom because whether she’s your friend, sister, aunt, wife, grandmother, cousin, neighbor or your own Mom, she deserves it.

Waffles Incaffienated, Beaver

Waffles Incaffienated in downtown Beaver has a great selection of all things sweet and savory! One of my favorites is the breakfast magic which is basically a platter of bacon, egg and cheese atop a waffle.

For the May special, they’ve created a sweet dish with Mom in mind. In “Poppy Goes the Waffle!,” an edible Spring flower (Anise Hyssop) compliments a poppy seed and lemon waffle that’s topped with cream cheese, blackberries, a blackberry reduction sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Use the NoWait app to avoid waiting in line.

Pacentro’s, Hopewell Twp.

Located in front of the Hopewell Shopping Center, Pacentro’s will have a white tablecloth Mother’s Day Brunch. The set menu includes fresh fruit, mascarpone French toast casserole, a sausage, egg and vegetable soufflé, choice of potato and cannoli for $19 per person.

Coffee and tea will be served but remind Mom to save those for after a mimosa or peach bellini, which are also included! Reservations encouraged.

Rainaldi’s, Center Twp.

If your Mom is an early riser, Rainaldi’s is a great place to enjoy breakfast since they open at 7 a.m. Located next to the Beaver Valley Mall, Rainaldi’s offers a lengthy list of omelets, pancakes, French toast and breakfast sandwiches and wraps.

If Mom wants to enjoy dessert first, try the decadent Reese’s peanut butter pancakes. The spinach, bacon, tomato and feta omelet is a flavorful choice, too. Rainaldi’s takes reservations and patio seating may be available if Mother Nature cooperates!

Heirloom, Beaver

Heirloom is the perfect place to treat Mom to a meal prepared with fresh, local ingredients.

Nestled in downtown Beaver, Chef Rich Montini is whipping up a special Mother’s Day Brunch menu featuring fresh fruit crepes, Surf ‘n’ Turf, crab cakes, lamb chops and fresh ravioli. Several classic menu items will also be available.

Heirloom is typically closed on Sundays so take advantage of this rare opportunity! Reservations encouraged.

Shakespeare’s, Ellwood City

For a medieval take on Mother’s Day, treat Mom like a queen at this real-life castle.

The Mother’s Day dinner buffet at Shakespeare’s is $26.95 per person and includes a variety of spring salads, soups, carving stations, entrees, pasta, vegetables, desserts and kid-friendly foods. Be sure to take a family photo next to the knight in shining armor. No seriously! Reservations required.

Grand Valley Inn, Fallston

If Mom enjoys wine, score some brownie points by wining and dining her at The Grand Valley Inn! Treat her to a glass – or maybe a bottle if you were a really sassy child – of wine from their extensive selection. You might as well try the banana pepper appetizer while you’re there!

Located off Route 51 in Fallston, Grand Valley will have some creative Mother’s Day specials in addition to serving the standard dinner menu all day. Reservations encouraged.

Beaver Valley Golf Club, Patterson Heights

If you’re not sure what kind of food Mom would prefer, the Beaver Valley Golf Club in Patterson Heights has you covered. The Mother’s Day dinner buffet is $23.95 per person and includes a variety of salads, fruit, meats, tortellini, sides, vegetables, homemade soups and assorted desserts. If you’ve never been to their bright dining room, there’s no better time. Reservations required.

I know these can’t be the only great places to celebrate Mother’s Day! Where are you taking Mom this year?
